The MPLC Umbrella License® for ARVC Member Campgrounds and RV Parks
In a few months your campground/RV Park will be filled with guests from all over the country eager to enjoy their summer vacations. Now more than ever guests expect a wide range of services and amenities; a video license allows for increased programming at a reasonable cost. Campgrounds frequently use the magic of the movies to enhance their guests’ vacation experience. Movies are a great way to keep kids entertained or foster group activities at your campground. Guests can beat the summer heat and enjoy a dive-in movie by the pool. However, before you schedule “Sunday Matinees” or “Movies Under the Stars”, make sure you know the law.
For over 15 years, ARVC and the Motion Picture Licensing Corporation (MPLC) have worked together to educate our members about the benefits of having a video license and to promote the wide range of programs that are available when your campground obtains an MPLC Umbrella License. As the camping season approaches, please be advised that if you wish to have movies or other video programs at your campground, a license is required to protect your campground from copyright infringement. Now is the best time to take advantage of the ARVC member rates, and to insure copyright compliance.
According to the Federal Copyright Act, pre-recorded home videocassettes or DVDs, those commonly available in retail or rental stores, are intended for personal, private, home use only. The MPLC is an independent copyright licensing service exclusively authorized by motion picture studios to grant the MPLC Umbrella License to businesses, non-profit groups and government organizations for the public performance of motion pictures contained within pre-recorded home videocassettes and DVDs.
To date, the MPLC has licensed more than 250,000 locations in the U.S. and over 450,000 locations worldwide in twenty-one countries. The MPLC’s license holders range from the smallest camps and public libraries, to the largest multi-national corporations and federal government departments, including all the major operators within our industry.
The MPLC Umbrella License represents a tremendous value for campgrounds. Once licensed, your campground can select movies and other programs from over 400 MPLC Member Licensors, including the MPAA major Hollywood studio members, ranging from Disney to Warner Bros., independent, foreign, faith-based, specialty, and children’s producers. Whether your campground currently shows movies or would like to, the MPLC provides several low-cost licensing options that allow for unlimited exhibitions. The Standard License is an annual license for campgrounds that wish to limit movies to indoor use, such as in a Recreation Room or Hall. With a Standard License your park is free to sponsor Family Movie Nights, child care programs, and other indoor activities. The Seasonal Premium License is available for campgrounds open less than six months a year that are looking for all-inclusive, campground-wide use, whether indoors or outdoors. The Annual Premium License provides the same comprehensive coverage for campgrounds open year round. Each Premium License provides comprehensive video coverage allowing for outdoor movies and large-scale family entertainment events like Dive-In Poolside Movies and Movies Under the Stars. For thousands of campgrounds across the country, the MPLC provides a variety of affordable video license options, all of which come with the confidence of copyright compliance.
